Little do we know that emotional well-being and mental health is one of the important health problems that everyone is dealing. Did you know that emotional problem such as depression, anxiety, and stress can lead to illnesses and affects the physical health? On the other hand, people who know how to control their emotion and are aware of their thoughts and feelings have healthier physical condition and way of thinking. These people know how to handle problems and feel good about their lives and relationships with other people.
When I was overweight few years back, I was actually sicker emotionally than physically. I was depressed, stressed, pressured and hate waking up in the morning and it worsens my eating habit. I did not know that my body was warning me about something is not going right. Negative state of emotional health manifests in these signs I have included below:
Change in appetite
Chest pain
Dry mouth
Extreme tiredness
Back pain
Headaches
High blood pressure
Insomnia
Diarrhea or constipation
Palpitations
Stiff neck
Sweating
Weight loss or gain
Upset stomach
If you notice some of these signs occur to you, you need to start making a change of perspective in your life. These signs of negative emotional well-being can decrease your immune system making you more vulnerable to bacterial and virus infections. Our mind is the most powerful aspect of our body; it controls everything from decisions to action and reaction. When you are feeling emotional down, you may not feel like exercising or eat and you will have the tendency to exploit alcohol, tobacco or drug addiction.
A study issued in the January 2014 of Psychosomatic Medicine instituted that by treating your depression and be aware of your emotion can lessen the risk of getting cardiovascular disease, heart attacks, and strokes by 50 percent. In addition to that, you can also be more protected against other illnesses and diseases. Some people attending their emotional issue through meditation and it proved to be such a great help to them personally. However, if you find that your negative emotions are keep getting worst, you must consult a psychologist and talk about your depression and emotional problem. Depression can be cure with proper counseling.
These are some tips you could follow in order to stay positive and healthy. This is not a step-by-step list, you can do this in any order as you wish, it is just an idea based on my personal experience and it worked for me. I hope it works for you too!
Talk to your friends and have fun. Socialization and health are interconnected with each other, that is why it is important to stay connected with family and friends. Based on the research of a professor of psychology at Carnegie Mellon University, Sheldon Cohen, Ph.D., people who have less social relationships were 4 times more likely to catch colds and flu than those of smokers. Least sociable people also have lower stress levels.
Give it all out. Expressing yourself helps you clear your head from your emotional issues. The Psychosomatic Medicine found that people who had HIV pen down their worries in papers every day for 30 minutes have increased their infection-fighting cells in the body. Meanwhile, women who suffer from breast cancer who undergone therapy to allow them to talk about their feelings shown to have a stronger immune system than those who doesn’t. Therefore, repressing yourself from your feelings or emotional condition will only worsen your problem. Give it all out and talk it, though, it can help you in many ways.
Relax your mind and body. This can be done through meditation. People who experience the emotional problem are often encouraged to do meditation or quiet time. This method is useful to help the individual find meaning and balance in their lives. Meditation can be in any form such as yoga, light exercise, reading, deep breathing, tai chi, or just sit quietly and relaxing your mind. Researchers from the UCLA found that 61 adults who take a tai chi classes three times a week and received a shingles vaccines at the end of the month proved to be two times higher in their immunity levels than those who does not involve in tai chi classes but received the same vaccines.
Groom yourself. We can easily point out depress people when we see them because people who are depressed do not really take the time to groom themselves. By grooming yourself is not only putting makeup and have a good haircut, it also means eating healthy and exercise regularly. Healthy routines can help you prevent against stress and depression. And most importantly, get enough sleep!
Manage your time well. Work, school, home, relationships and you can be overwhelming especially when you had a hard time juggling between these things by yourself. I have even known some people who have two jobs and seem so miserable just by looking at them. Managing our time well is not an easy thing to do, sometimes we think that 24 hours is not enough and need more time and had to work on weekends. However, try to look at the glimpse of positivity in your life and be grateful for whatever you have at the moment. Set aside weekend as your day off and spend it only for you and your family. Let go of the things that make you sad and stressed and you will be surprised to find how happier your life will be afterward. Make time for things you love and enjoy.
Look for an expert’s advice. If you think that everything seems hopeless and nothing can help you, I suggest that you look for an expert’s advice and talk about you emotional condition. Do not be afraid of expressing yourself to others especially a psychologist, they know what’s best for you and how you can deal with the emotional problem. Maybe you just need someone to talk to and ears to listen. If this matter is not treated as soon as possible, it can lead to more serious health problems. Take action now!
